I recommend using this technique often; you can do so anytime you encounter a difficult emotion. As you practice simply sitting with difficult emotions, you’ll probably notice that feelings are like waves crashing on the sand: they ebb and flow. Although you may be feeling negative emotions in the moment, they’ll probably fade soon, making way for other emotions. Understanding this can help you be willing to feel an emotion without acting on any urges that may accompany it.
Opening the Door to Positive Emotions
Extending mindfulness and acceptance to difficult emotions also has the benefit of helping you better connect with other, more positive emotions. When you accept difficult emotions rather than struggling against them, they no longer hold as much power over you; their effect is diminished. This leaves room for emotions like joy, happiness, mischievousness, appreciation, confidence, daring, and playfulness to emerge. In addition, you’ll notice and identify these positive emotions more easily because you’re more in touch with your inner experience.
Paying attention to your feelings will also help you connect with yourself and be emotionally aware. In addition, you’ll be in a much better position to have positive experiences with the people you go out with. This emotionally balanced perspective can vastly improve the outcome of your dates, especially when combined with good dating skills. Therefore, the rest of this chapter outlines skills that will boost your dating success. As you’ll notice, many of these skills involve bringing more mindfulness to interactions with your date, allowing you to have a good time, connect with your positive emotions, and enjoy yourself. After all, dating someone you like is a very exhilarating and fun experience.
